Missed Call Statistics for Small Businesses (2026): What the Data Actually Shows

The missed-call numbers that hold up, where each one comes from, and the two famous statistics nobody can trace back to a study.

The Short Answer

How many calls do small businesses miss?

Somewhere between about 1 in 7 and 6 in 10, depending on who measured and which businesses they measured. The most recent call data, from 2025 and 2026, puts it between 14% and 44%. The rest of the picture, in short:

  • Most callers do not leave a voicemail. In a 2025 CallRail survey, 42% of consumers said they leave one when a business does not answer.
  • Businesses rarely call back. Quo's data on 16.7 million missed business calls found 69% got no callback within 48 hours.
  • Callbacks often go unanswered anyway. In a 2024 TransUnion survey, 74% of US adults said they do not answer calls from unknown numbers.
  • A call is worth your booking rate times your job value. ServiceTitan's data shows trade businesses book about 42% of calls on average, and 24% for shops with fewer than five technicians.
  • Two of the most quoted figures have no traceable source: that 80% of callers will not leave a voicemail, and that 85% of missed callers never call back.
Chart: share of business calls that go unanswered, depending on who measured. CallRail found 14 percent of calls to home services businesses were missed, from 1.1 million conversations, published in 2025. CallRail's own call data showed 28 percent of inbound calls unanswered on average, published in 2026. Invoca found 44 percent of callers never reached a person, from 70 million calls across 10 industries, published in 2026. A 2016 test by 411 Locals of 85 businesses over 30 days found 62 percent of calls were not answered live.Share of business calls not answered, by source0%25%50%75%100%CallRailhome servicesCallRail, home services: 14%14%1.1 million conversations, 2025CallRailall customersCallRail, all customers: 28%28%CallRail call data, 2026Invocanever reached a personInvoca, never reached a person: 44%44%70 million calls, 10 industries, 2026411 Localssmall-business test411 Locals, small-business test: 62%62%85 businesses over 30 days, 2016Measured from call records. About these numbers

Each figure was traced to the earliest source we could find and checked on October 25, 2026. Almost all missed-call data is published by companies that sell phone systems, call tracking, answering services, or business software, including Jobber, one of the AI receptionists we review. We list who published each figure and what they sell, so you can weigh it.

3
Unanswered Calls

What percentage of calls do small businesses miss?

Four sources have measured it from actual calls, and they disagree by a factor of four:

  • CallRail, 14% for home services (January 2025). From 1.1 million conversations across its customers. Healthcare missed the most, at 32%, then legal at 28%, home services at 14%, and real estate at 9%.
  • CallRail, 28% overall (July 2026). CallRail says its data shows 28% of inbound calls go unanswered on average. It does not say how many calls that covers.
  • Invoca, 44% (July 2026). From more than 70 million calls across 10 industries, 56% of callers spoke with a person, so 44% never did. Invoca's data covers calls driven by marketing, which may not look like a typical small business's phone.
  • 411 Locals, 62% (2016). The source of the widely quoted "62% of calls go unanswered." A local marketing agency monitored 85 businesses in 58 industries for 30 days: 37.8% of calls were answered by a person, 37.8% went to voicemail, and 24.3% got no response. It also found 70% of the businesses answered fewer than half their calls.

The gap is not as strange as it looks. A business that pays for call tracking is already paying attention to its phone, so CallRail's and Invoca's customers probably answer more than average. The 411 Locals test is closer to an ordinary small business, but it is small and ten years old. A fair reading of the recent data is that somewhere between one call in seven and four in ten goes unanswered, and probably more at small businesses where the owner is also doing the work.

4
Voicemail

What percentage of callers leave a voicemail?

Fewer than half, by the evidence that exists:

  • 42% say they leave one. In CallRail's 2025 survey of 1,000 US consumers, 42% said they leave a voicemail when a business does not answer, 24% switch to online chat, and 21% call another provider.
  • 69% hung up. Moneypenny, a UK-founded answering service, reported in 2016 that 69% of callers who reached voicemail hung up without leaving a message. Its report does not explain how that was measured.

What people say in a survey and what they do on the phone are not the same, so the true share leaving a message is probably lower than 42%. What the evidence does not support is the precise "80%" quoted everywhere; more on that below.

5
Callbacks

Do missed callers call back, and do businesses call them back?

Nobody has published a reliable measure of how many customers call back. The well-known "85% never call back" has no study behind it that we could find. What has been measured is the business side, and it is not flattering:

  • 69% of missed calls get no callback within 48 hours. Quo, a business phone company, looked at 16.7 million missed calls logged by its customers over three months, published in August 2026. Only 31% were returned at all, nearly all of those within 24 hours. Callback rates ranged from 41% in healthcare to 21% at non-profits.
  • 74% of adults do not answer unknown numbers. In TransUnion's August 2024 survey of 1,556 US adults, 74% said they do not answer calls from unknown numbers for fear of scams, and 70% had ignored a call that turned out to be legitimate.

Put together, a callback is a weak safety net. It usually does not happen, and when it does, it comes from a number the customer may not recognize. If you rely on calling back, do it the same day, from the number they called, and send a text first.

6
Timing

How many calls come in after business hours?

Fewer than many vendors claim, but it depends heavily on the trade:

  • HVAC: 9.8% to 14.1% of calls, depending on the month. ServiceTitan's 2025 data from residential HVAC contractors counted calls outside Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The share peaked in June and was lowest in October. ServiceTitan notes the data is not nationally representative.
  • Locksmiths: 34% after 5 p.m., plus 8% before 9 a.m. BrightLocal's study of calls from 45,264 Google Business Profile listings, using 2017 to 2018 data. Restaurants took 51% of their calls after 5 p.m.

After-hours share is only part of the picture. Many missed calls happen during the working day: on a job, on another call, or at lunch. The missed call cost calculator covers when they tend to happen and what fixes each kind.

7
Value

What is a missed call worth?

There is no measured dollar figure for a missed call, and the ones quoted are arithmetic on assumptions. The honest version is your own arithmetic: the share of calls you would have booked, times what a job is worth to you.

The best published data on the first half comes from ServiceTitan, which looked at more than 3,000 trade businesses in the US and Canada in June 2022. They booked 42% of calls on average: 43% in plumbing, 41% in electrical, 38% in HVAC, and 31% in garage door and water treatment. Size mattered most. Shops with 25 or more technicians booked 59% of calls, and shops with fewer than five booked 24%.

Speed also matters. In Jobber's survey of 1,050 home service owners in December 2025, 28% said customers expect an immediate response and another 28% said within an hour. That is the owner's view of customers, not customers' own answers, but it matches what anyone who has called around for a plumber knows.

Handle With Care

Which missed call statistics don't hold up?

These appear on hundreds of pages. We could not find an original study for any of them:

  • "80% of callers sent to voicemail don't leave a message." The earliest version we found is a November 2014 CRM magazine column that credits Forbes, without naming a study. Real figures point the same way but are lower and less precise.
  • "85% of people whose calls go unanswered won't call back." Repeated in press releases and vendor pages, including CallRail's January 2025 release, without a study behind it.
  • "Small businesses lose $126,000 a year to missed calls." An estimate published by marketing and answering service companies, built from assumed call volumes and job values rather than measured.
  • "A missed call costs $1,200 on average." Often credited to Invoca; the Invoca report we checked does not contain it. It reads like an assumed job value times an assumed booking rate.

None of this means missed calls are cheap. It means the precise, dramatic numbers are not evidence, and a business deciding whether to spend money on answering its phone is better off counting its own missed calls than borrowing someone else's.

9
Method

How we checked these statistics

We started from the missed-call figures quoted most often, followed each one back through the pages that repeat it to the earliest source we could find, and read that source for its date, sample, and method. Where a figure exists only on pages citing other pages, we list it as untraced.

PublisherWhat it sells
CallRailCall tracking and an AI call answering assistant
InvocaCall tracking and conversation analytics
QuoA business phone system
411 LocalsLocal marketing services
MoneypennyA human answering service
TransUnionBranded caller ID, among other services
ServiceTitanField service software
BrightLocalLocal SEO software
JobberField service software, including an AI Receptionist we review

Every one of them has a reason to show that phones matter, which does not make the data wrong, but it is worth knowing. Measured figures from call records are stronger than surveys, and both are stronger than untraced numbers. For the wider picture on AI receptionists, adoption, and caller attitudes, see our 2026 AI voice agent data roundup.

The bottom line: on recent data small businesses miss somewhere between one call in seven and four in ten, most callers do not leave a voicemail, and most missed calls are never returned. The famous 80% and 85% figures have no study behind them, but the measured data points the same way. Count your own missed calls, then run them through the missed call cost calculator. If the number is worth fixing, see what an AI receptionist costs or compare AI and human answering services.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on who is measuring. Call data published in 2025 and 2026 puts it between about 14 percent, for CallRail's home services customers, and 44 percent, for Invoca's callers who never reached a person. A small 2016 test by 411 Locals found 62 percent of calls to small businesses were not answered live. Your own call history is the only figure that applies to your business.
We could not find an original study. The earliest version we found is a 2014 CRM magazine column that credits Forbes without naming any research. The evidence that does exist points the same way but is lower: in a 2025 CallRail survey of 1,000 US consumers, 42 percent said they leave a voicemail, so most do not.
No study we could find measured it. The figure is repeated widely, including in vendor press releases, but none name a source. What has been measured is the other side: Quo's data on 16.7 million missed calls found businesses did not call back 69 percent of them within 48 hours.
It varies by trade. ServiceTitan's 2025 data shows residential HVAC contractors got between 9.8 and 14.1 percent of calls outside weekday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., depending on the month. An older BrightLocal study found locksmiths got 34 percent of listing calls after 5 p.m. and restaurants 51 percent. Daytime calls missed while you are busy usually outnumber after-hours ones.
Mostly fear of scams. In TransUnion's 2024 survey of 1,556 US adults, 74 percent said they do not answer calls from unknown numbers, and 70 percent had ignored a call that turned out to be legitimate. Call back the same day, from the number the customer called, and send a text first so they know who it is.
Because they measure different businesses in different ways. Call tracking companies measure their own customers, who already care about their phones. Some sources count a call as missed only with no answer at all, others count voicemail too. Studies range from 2016 to 2026, and most come from companies that sell phone or answering products.
