How I put this together
Feature descriptions were compiled from official Jobber documentation and verified against the live product, current as of August 2026. On top of that, I set up a free Jobber trial and went through the entire Receptionist setup wizard, then explored the Manage dashboard, so the walkthrough below is firsthand. Going through the product this way also turned up a change worth flagging, which I cover in the channels note.
What I did not do is run the Receptionist on a live public phone line, because going live on a dedicated number requires upgrading from the trial, so I do not claim impressions of live call quality. Cost is kept off this page on purpose. For current numbers see the AI voice agent pricing hub.
Jobber launched its AI Receptionist in August 2025 and announced it had handled more than 200,000 conversations by the time the product went public. For a field service management (FSM) platform, meaning the software a service business uses to schedule jobs, dispatch crews, and invoice, shipping a native answering feature that fast was genuinely notable. The useful question for a small business owner is not what it costs on any given day, but what it actually does well, where it falls short, and how it stacks up against the other AI receptionists a trade or home service business is likely to consider.
What does Jobber AI Receptionist actually do?
Jobber AI Receptionist is a 24/7 inbound answering service built directly into the Jobber platform, not a third-party integration. When a call comes in and no one on your team picks up, the Receptionist answers with a customizable greeting, works through the caller's request, and takes one of several actions depending on what the caller needs.
For existing clients, it matches the incoming caller ID to the profile already in your Jobber account. New leads are captured as work requests and logged automatically. Jobs can be booked directly into your Jobber calendar using the same online booking settings you have already configured, which means your availability windows and service areas carry over without any extra setup. If a caller uses a keyword you have flagged as urgent, such as "emergency" or "flood", the system triggers a notification to your team via your configured escalation method. Callers who hang up before the agent can help receive an automatic SMS text-back.
All conversation transcripts, summaries, and call recordings appear in a dedicated Receptionist dashboard inside Jobber. There is no separate login, no separate app, and no manual data entry. That frictionless integration is the product's single strongest selling point, and it is a meaningful one for any business already running daily operations through Jobber.
What it does not do: outbound calls, email handling, bilingual support (Spanish capability is not confirmed from official sources), or vendor-provided human backup if the AI cannot resolve the call. It handles inbound voice, SMS, and, as of August 2026, website chat (more on that below), transfers to your own team when needed, and is limited to one dedicated phone number per account.
The free trial and setup wizard, step by step
Jobber's free trial is more generous than some. Rather than only demoing the agent, it let me build the whole Receptionist through a guided wizard and reach a test step, with only the live dedicated phone number gated behind upgrading. Here is that walk.
Receptionist is a top-level item in the Jobber left menu. Selecting it, the right pane offers to try it by having it call a number you enter, with a green Get Started With Receptionist button that kicks off the setup wizard.
The wizard opens by having you write the greeting the Receptionist uses when it answers.
Next you pick the booking form the Receptionist uses to schedule jobs into your calendar, and a separate form for taking requests. You can use Jobber's Default Forms, so you are not forced to build anything from scratch to get moving.
Here you set a point of contact to notify by email for follow-up tasks, and an escalation policy. The policy is a list of terms that, if the Receptionist hears them on a call, escalate to a contact you choose, either by sending them a text message or by transferring the call.
This is Jobber's version of a knowledge base. You can let it generate content with AI from your website, and you add About, Policies, and Services as separate text fields, so the Receptionist has the context it needs to answer accurately.
Before going live, the wizard has a test step: you enter a phone number and the Receptionist calls you so you can hear how it handles a call. Being able to test on the trial, before paying, is a genuinely nice touch.
The wizard finishes and tells you the Receptionist is ready. On the free trial, two options appear: upgrade your Jobber plan, or configure a dedicated phone number for the Receptionist. That is the point where putting it on a real, live number requires a paid plan. The build and the test are free; going live is not.
The trial lets you build and test the Receptionist end to end, but a live dedicated phone number requires upgrading your Jobber plan. Jobber publishes its plan pricing on its own site, and the pricing hub compares it against the rest of the category.
Beyond the wizard: the Manage dashboard
The wizard gets you running, but the Receptionist has its own dashboard with metrics and a full list of conversations, plus a Manage tab that goes well past the initial setup.
At the top of Manage, a Text messaging group lets you turn on texting, set a text greeting, and enable SMS send-back, which texts clients who hang up on a Receptionist call. A Voice calls group toggles voice on or off, sets call routing (the default has the Receptionist answer every call), and sets the phone greeting.
Scrolling down, there are more voice options and, notably, a Website Chat section you can turn on.
When this review first published, Jobber Receptionist was voice and SMS only, and older comparisons (including an earlier version of this page) listed website chat as something it lacked. The Manage area now includes a Website Chat channel you can switch on, so as of August 2026 the Receptionist covers voice, SMS, and website chat. The comparison table and limitations on this page reflect that.
Further down, an Actions area configures behaviors like the escalation policy and appointment handling, giving you more control than the wizard exposes on its own.

How does Jobber compare to Housecall Pro, HighLevel and ElevenLabs?
The right AI receptionist depends less on any single feature and more on how the platform is shaped: whether it is tied to your field service software, whether it does outbound as well as inbound, and how much setup it demands. The table below compares Jobber against the three alternatives a small service business is most likely to weigh, on capability rather than price.
| Platform | Type | Calls handled | Native booking | Notable strength |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jobber AI Receptionist | FSM-native (Jobber) | Inbound calls, SMS + website chat | Jobber calendar | Matches caller ID to existing clients |
| Housecall Pro CSR AI | FSM-native (Housecall Pro) | Inbound calls + website chat | Housecall Pro calendar | Escalates to human agents (HCP Assist) |
| HighLevel Voice AI | All-in-one CRM platform | Inbound + outbound | HighLevel calendars | Outbound campaigns + full CRM |
| ElevenLabs Agents | Standalone voice agent | Inbound + outbound | Via integrations you connect | Most natural voice, 30+ languages |
This compares platforms on capabilities and fit, not on price. Vendor pricing changes frequently and is best confirmed directly on each vendor's own site. For a current side-by-side cost comparison across the whole category, including per-minute AI platforms and human answering services, see the AI voice agent pricing hub. For how those costs break down component by component, the AI receptionist cost explainer walks through the pieces. Feature availability is from official vendor documentation and the live products, current as of August 2026 and subject to change.
Where the native Jobber integration genuinely wins
If you are already on Jobber, the case for the built-in Receptionist is straightforward and worth taking seriously, and almost none of it is about price. There is no Zapier glue to maintain, no webhook to break on a platform update, and no separate login for your office manager to check each morning. Every conversation transcript and call recording appears in the same Jobber dashboard your team already uses for scheduling, invoicing, and client management.
The caller ID matching to existing client profiles is a particular standout. When a returning client calls after hours, the Receptionist already knows who they are, what jobs they have had, and can route the interaction with that context rather than treating them as a new lead. That is genuinely difficult to replicate with a standalone agent plugged in via Zapier, where the sync depends on data already being in both systems and the connection staying healthy.
The auto-configuration from existing Jobber settings is also worth noting, and it matched my experience in the wizard: your service areas, available booking slots, and online booking rules carry directly into the Receptionist, and you can seed its knowledge base straight from your website. For a busy owner who does not want to configure a second platform, that matters. The how small businesses use AI voice agents overview covers this "no extra tool" pattern in more depth if you want the broader context.
Where another platform is the better fit
Jobber's built-in Receptionist is not the right answer for every business, and the reasons come down to capability and fit rather than dollars. For a fuller decision framework on when the built-in Receptionist is enough versus when a dedicated AI voice agent is worth the added setup, see our Jobber AI Receptionist vs dedicated AI voice agents comparison.
The first is outbound. Jobber is strictly inbound. If you want appointment-reminder calls, web-form lead callbacks, or any kind of outreach sequence, HighLevel Voice AI is built for it: outbound campaigns run alongside inbound answering, and the agent sits on top of a full CRM with email, SMS, pipelines, and, for agencies, white-label rebilling. For a business that wants its phone agent and its marketing stack in one place, that breadth is the differentiator.
The second is voice quality and independence from any one platform. If the caller experience is what matters most, or you simply do not want your receptionist tied to a field service tool, ElevenLabs Agents is the standout. It has the most natural-sounding voice in this set and broad multilingual support, and because it is standalone you can connect it to whatever calendar or CRM you already run. The trade is setup effort: it is developer-first and not turnkey the way a built-in FSM feature is.
The third is human escalation. The other field-service-native option, Housecall Pro CSR AI (its customer service representative AI), can escalate calls to live human agents through Housecall Pro's HCP Assist service, something Jobber's feature does not provide. Both platforms now offer website chat, so that is no longer the dividing line, but if your calls sometimes need a real person mid-conversation, Housecall Pro's native human escalation is a meaningful advantage. Both remain inbound only.
The fourth is geography, and it is worth being precise here. Jobber the platform serves businesses in more than 60 countries, but the Receptionist feature depends on a Jobber dedicated phone number, and those are currently available only in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. So a business in, say, Australia can run its whole operation on Jobber yet still cannot use the Receptionist, and would need a standalone solution for AI call answering. For a side-by-side look at how these platforms stack up across different business types, the best AI voice agent for small business guide has segmented verdicts by operator size and use case.
Does Jobber AI Receptionist replace your office staff or dispatcher?
No, and it is not designed to. The Receptionist is a safety net for inbound calls and texts that your team cannot get to, not a substitute for the people running your day-to-day operations. Think of it as the front door being staffed at midnight when your dispatcher is off the clock, not as a reason to cut dispatcher hours.
What it actually does is remove the silent revenue leak most field service businesses have: the calls that ring out at 7pm on a Tuesday, hit voicemail, and never convert because the competitor who answered at 7:01pm got the job instead. The Receptionist catches those calls, captures the lead, books the job if the caller is ready, and creates a work request in Jobber so the first thing your team sees Wednesday morning is a queue of overnight inquiries, not a pile of missed calls with no context.
The person who works alongside this tool well, whether that is a solo operator or an office manager on a 10-person crew, becomes more productive because the routine intake work is handled before they sit down. The tool augments what they do; it does not replace the judgment, relationship-building, and problem-solving that make a field service business worth hiring in the first place.
Segmented verdicts: who should use what
There is no single winner here, only the right fit for how your business runs. Here is how I would place the four.
Best for businesses already running on Jobber
Jobber AI Receptionist. Native calendar booking, caller ID matching to existing clients, and a single-dashboard experience make it the path of least resistance. If you already live inside Jobber every day, nothing else integrates as cleanly, and that simplicity is the whole point.
Best if you need outbound as well as inbound
HighLevel Voice AI. Outbound campaigns, appointment reminders, and web-form callbacks sit alongside inbound answering, all on top of a full CRM. For an operator who wants one platform for both the phone agent and the marketing stack, it is the most complete option here.
Best if you are choosing an FSM or want human escalation
Housecall Pro CSR AI. Escalation to Housecall Pro's HCP Assist human agents is a genuine advantage for businesses whose calls sometimes need a person. If you are still picking your field service software, this is the closest built-in competitor to Jobber's.
Best for voice quality or operators not tied to an FSM
ElevenLabs Agents. The most natural-sounding voice in this comparison, broad multilingual support, and a standalone setup make it the most flexible choice for businesses whose requirements do not fit neatly inside an FSM platform, as long as you are comfortable with developer-first setup.
